Difference in tire types

Summer tires are pretty self-explanatory! These tires are best in warm weather when it’s hot outside and provide good road grip and sharp handling. All-season tires go best with a set of designated winter tires, these tires are designed to take you through the seasons we have here in the city of Vancouver, but do not perform well in deep snow and sheer ice.

The all-weather tire is marked with the severe service emblem for winter conditions, just like a winter tire, but it can stay on your vehicle all year round. Having said that, all-weather tires may wear out faster than your winter tires. What is the answer? Personally, I have winter tires on my Chevy Tahoe in the winter which takes me around the city and up to Whistler, and into the interior. And when needed I have chains. (That topic will be covered in another blog)! In March I put my summer tires on, which takes me through until fall/winter.

Your driving habits and destination will be the factors you need to consider when choosing tires for your vehicle.

Lesson here: Don’t over think it, get a tire that suits your specific needs and don’t expect more out of your tires than they can handle in winter weather. Follow the BC guidelines for winter tires:

“The province requires passenger vehicles to be equipped with winter tires between Oct. 1 and March 31 while travelling on almost all highways outside the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island. Trucks travelling these routes are also required to carry chains.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/winter-tires-required-1.4315296
